How does a crochet oval differ from a circle?

An oval starts with a foundation chain (the straight centre) and works around both sides with semicircular increases at each end. A circle starts from a single point. The foundation chain length determines the difference between the oval length and width.

How long should the foundation chain be?

The foundation chain equals the difference between the desired length and width. For a 30x20cm oval, the chain represents 10cm of straight length. Convert to stitches using your gauge.

How many increases at each end of the oval?
