Mattress Stitch Calculator — Seaming Yarn Needed

Calculate yarn needed for mattress stitch seaming based on seam length, yarn weight and stitch pattern.

Length of one seam in centimetres

Total seams to sew (e.g. 2 side seams + 2 sleeve seams = 4)

Heavier yarns use more length per seam

Textured patterns use more seaming yarn

Full bar is standard; half stitch is used for ribbed seams

How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates yarn for mattress stitch accounting for yarn weight, stitch pattern and seam construction.

The formula

Yarn per seam = Seam length x Weight multiplier x Pattern multiplier x Pickup multiplier

Total = (Yarn per seam + Tail allowance) x (1 + Extra %) x Number of seams

Heavier yarns need more length per stitch because the yarn path through each bar pickup is longer. Textured patterns like garter and cables use more yarn because the surface is not flat.
