How much yarn does mattress stitch use?

Mattress stitch uses approximately 3 times the seam length. For a 40cm side seam, allow 120cm (1.2m) of yarn. Always cut more than you think you need - running out mid-seam requires re-starting.

What is mattress stitch?

Mattress stitch is an invisible seaming technique where you pick up bars between edge stitches on each piece alternately. When pulled tight, the seam is virtually invisible from the right side and creates a flat join.

How do I work mattress stitch?

Lay pieces side by side, right sides up. Thread a tapestry needle. Pick up one bar between the first and second stitches on one side, then one bar on the other side. Alternate back and forth, pulling tight every few stitches.

Can I use a different colour yarn for mattress stitch?

Use matching yarn for invisible seams. A contrasting colour can be used for decorative effect. When the yarn is pulled tight, very little shows on the right side, but matching yarn ensures complete invisibility.

Is mattress stitch better than other seaming methods?

Mattress stitch creates the most invisible seam for stockinette fabric. For ribbing, use mattress stitch but pick up half a stitch in to maintain the rib pattern. For garter stitch, use a modified version picking up garter bumps.
