What is ease in knitting?

Ease is the difference between your body measurement and the finished garment measurement. Positive ease means the garment is larger than your body (looser), zero ease means it matches exactly, and negative ease means the garment is smaller (the fabric stretches to fit).

How much ease should a sweater have?

For a standard-fit sweater, 5–10cm of positive ease is typical. Close-fitting sweaters use 0–5cm. Relaxed and oversized styles use 15–25cm or more. The yarn fibre matters too — stretchy yarns like wool need less ease than cotton or linen.

What is negative ease?

Negative ease means the finished garment measurement is smaller than your body. The fabric stretches when worn, which creates a snug, body-hugging fit. This works well with stretchy yarns and stitch patterns like ribbing. Typically −2 to −5cm for sweaters.

Should I add extra ease for layering?

Yes. If you plan to wear a shirt or T-shirt underneath, add 2–4cm extra to your ease amount. For wearing over a thick shirt or thin jumper, add 4–6cm. This ensures the garment sits comfortably over your layers without pulling.
