What is the gauge ratio used for?

The gauge ratio tells you the relationship between horizontal (stitch) and vertical (row) measurements. It is essential for shaping: if you decrease 1 stitch every 2 rows, the resulting diagonal angle depends on your gauge ratio. Designers use this ratio to calculate necklines, raglan angles, and mitre corners.

What is a typical gauge ratio?

Most yarns in stockinette stitch have a ratio of about 1.3-1.5 (rows per stitch). This means stitches are wider than they are tall. Cotton tends to have a lower ratio (nearly square stitches), while some wools have higher ratios. Garter stitch typically has a ratio close to 2.0.

How does gauge ratio affect diagonal lines?

A 45-degree diagonal line in knitting does not come from decreasing every other row. Because stitches are wider than rows are tall, you need to decrease more frequently (e.g. every row) for a true 45-degree angle, or less frequently for a shallower angle. The gauge ratio determines the exact frequency.
