How Do You Calculate Yarn Yardage From Grams?

Reading a Ball Band
Ball bands normally give two figures: total weight (usually 50g or 100g) and either the total length directly, or a metres-per-100g rate. If the label already states the length (for example “50g / 137m”), that is your answer and no sum is needed. Where only the rate is given, scale it to the ball's actual weight:
Metres in the ball = (ball weight ÷ 100) × metres per 100g
For a 50g ball labelled 225m per 100g (a typical DK figure, sitting inside the 200–270m/100g band above): 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5, and 0.5 × 225 = 112.5m, so about 113m.
Worked Example: Balls Needed for a Project
Say a pattern calls for 800m of that same DK yarn, sold in 50g balls at 225m per 100g:
- Metres per ball: 50 ÷ 100 × 225 = 112.5m
- Balls needed: 800 ÷ 112.5 = 7.11, rounded up to 8 balls
- Total weight: 8 × 50g = 400g
- In yards: 800 × 1.0936 = 874.88, rounded to 875 yards

Finding the Weight of an Unlabelled Yarn
No ball band, no problem, as long as you can weigh and measure a length. Wind off a known length (round a metre rule, or use a niddy-noddy of known circumference and count the wraps), weigh that length, then scale to 100g the same way, in reverse:
Metres per 100g = (measured metres ÷ weight in grams) × 100
Example: an unlabelled skein weighs 100g and measures out at 400m: 400 ÷ 100 × 100 = 400m per 100g, which sits inside the fingering / 4-ply band (350–450m/100g) in the table above, telling you what weight category you are holding even without a label.
Why the Number on the Label Varies So Much
Thicker yarns pack fewer metres into the same 100g because each strand uses more fibre per metre of length, which is why super bulky yarn runs to as little as 50–90m per 100g while chunky sits around 90–130m while lace yarn can reach 600–800m per 100g. Fibre matters too: cotton is denser and has fewer metres per gram than wool at the same nominal weight, so always check the actual label figure rather than assuming a weight category's typical range applies exactly to your yarn.
