Getting Your Stitch Counts Right
Accurate stitch counts are the backbone of well-fitting knitted garments and neat pattern work. Whether you are casting on for a new project, shaping a sleeve, or fitting a cable pattern into your design, getting the numbers right saves hours of frogging and re-knitting.
When casting on, your stitch count must account for your gauge, the desired width, any pattern repeat requirements, and edge stitches. For example, if your pattern repeat is 8 stitches, your total must be a multiple of 8 plus any edge stitches. Our cast on calculator handles all of this automatically.
Evenly spacing increases or decreases across a row is one of the most common knitting calculations. The key is to distribute them as evenly as possible while keeping the remaining stitches in workable groups. For example, increasing 10 stitches across 80 stitches means working an increase every 8th stitch. Our increase and decrease calculators give you the exact placement instructions.
Cables pull the fabric narrower because stitches cross over each other. A 6-stitch cable typically uses about 10-15% more yarn than stockinette and narrows the fabric by roughly the same percentage. Our cable stitch calculator helps you account for these changes when planning a cabled garment.
