Cast On Calculator โ€” Stitches for Any Width

Calculate the exact number of stitches to cast on for your desired width, accounting for pattern repeats and edge stitches.

Knitting in the round

No edge stitches needed when knitting in the round

How We Calculate This

This calculator multiplies your stitch gauge by target width, then adjusts for pattern repeats and edge stitches.

The formula

Raw stitches = Target width (cm) x (Stitch gauge / Gauge swatch size)

Pattern body = (Raw stitches - Edge stitches), rounded to the nearest common multiple of the pattern repeat and the Round to Nearest value

Cast on = Pattern body + Edge stitches

The gauge swatch size is 10cm unless you change it in Advanced Options, and the Stitch Gauge box is labelled with whichever size is set so you always enter the count over the swatch you actually measured. Edge stitches are dropped when Knitting in the round is on because there are no side seams to sew. If the edge stitches you ask for would leave the pattern body below zero, the calculator refuses and names the field to change rather than printing a negative body.

Two things this calculator does not know. It does not know your cast-on method, and some cast-on edges come out firmer than others, so cast on the edge of your swatch the same way you mean to cast on the garment. It also works at the gauge you type in, unblocked: if your swatch grows or draws in when blocked, measure it blocked and enter that figure.
