How do I increase stitches evenly across a row?

Divide the current stitch count by the number of increases to get the interval. For example, 100 stitches with 10 increases: knit 9, increase, repeat. If there is a remainder, distribute the extra stitches at the beginning and end of the row.

What type of increase should I use?

M1L (make 1 left) and M1R (make 1 right) are nearly invisible. KFB (knit front and back) is easier but creates a small bump. Yarn overs create deliberate holes for lace. Choose based on whether you want the increase to be visible or invisible.
